ABOUT THE PROJECT

Walkie turns everyday walking into a search of ordinary fun

Walkie is an APP designed to inject joy into pedestrian exploration while documenting urban street signage and typography. As users wander through the city, they can scan and collect unique letterforms that capture local culture and craftsmanship, transforming scattered text into a personalized, reusable digital font library. By combining font collecting with urban exploration, this project aims to redefine the pedestrian experience, turning an everyday stroll into an interactive, creative adventure.

CHALLENGES

Current font related tools are clinical and catered purely to designers, completely missing the emotional connection and physical context of the pedestrian’s journey and archiving.

During my user research and technical mapping phases, I identified significant friction: urban walkers lacked a playful incentive to engage with their surroundings, while design enthusiasts found it tedious to catalog, isolate, and utilize the letterforms they discovered in the wild. The core challenge became: How do we lower the barrier to font archiving and design an engaging, gamified interaction that transforms casual city wanderers into active cultural preservationists?

Every step A letter, Every month A font

This personalized Urban Archive builds a living font library directly from the user's daily exploration. By mapping typography to an individual’s unique commute to work, school, or home, Walkie transforms boring, repetitive routines into an engaging creative ritual.

The resulting typeface becomes entirely unique to their personal journey. Ultimately, the project aims to gamify the mundane, turning boring daily routines into something people genuinely look forward to enjoying.
