This sponsored project with Google explored how AI can support packaging design workflows through a collaboration between media and industrial design. Starting from existing Google products and 2.0(current) design style, we experimented with generative AI across ideation, visualization, and prototyping to propose the 3.0 future, while identifying its limitations in production. We also proposed a speculative sports AR eyewear concept in collab with Oakley as an extension of Google’s ecosystem. The project resulted in packaging concepts and a refined workflow that bridges AI generation with physical design.

2.0?3.0? What does it mean?
Replicating Current Style w AI
Starting with the 2.0 Design, we to tried to create packaging for products w/o the 2.0 packaging like doorbell and tablet, with the prompt and reference from other products' packaging like pixel phone or watch.
New Product X 3.0 Pkg Design
Moving on to a more speculative idea to work on 3.0 design, which not yet existed, we proposed a collab product--AR sportswear glasses collab with Oakley. What would the packaging look like? With the help of ChatGPT in prompting, we used ImageFX, a high quality image generation tool, made by Google Lab, to produced to mockup images.

Thinking about how the future of packaging design would be highly focused on sustainability, we wanted to produce INK-FREE packaging which also aligned well with current Google 2.0 packaging design style that adopted line art a lot.
With the help of ChatGPT 4o, creating a laser engraving ready file only took less than a minute, with the product of glasses that were completely AI-generated as well.

Acknowledging how unsteady the quality of AI production can be and how fast different tools evolve and compete, we wanted to make sure if AI workflow was adopted within the company, everyone, designers or non-designers, would be able to utilize it with all updated info equipped.
Introducing--Workflow Wizard, a plugin tool that helps you document the prompts and process, every time you use it it gets better. (YES it's crowd sourcing!)
It learns from your experience and is able to recommend different tools based on which phase of design you're in and the criteria provided.
